How to make it?

To create titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, larger particles of titanium dioxide are broken down into smaller ones, usually less than 100 nanometers. Various methods exist for producing TiO2 nanoparticles, each with pros and cons. This guide will concentrate on an easy-to-follow version of the Sol-Gel method, which is ideal for small-scale laboratory production.

Procedure:

Step 1: Prepare the Solutions

  1. Measure 20 mL of ethanol and pour it into a beaker.
  2. Mix 10 mL of distilled water in a separate beaker with 1 mL of acetic acid.

Step 2: Prepare the Sol-Gel

  1. Slowly add 2 mL of titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) to the ethanol while stirring continuously with a magnetic stirrer.
  2. Continue stirring for 15-20 minutes to dissolve the TTIP in the ethanol fully.
  3. Slowly add the water-acetic acid mixture to the TTIP-ethanol solution while continuing to stir.
  4. Keep stirring the mixture for another 30-60 minutes to form a homogenous sol.

Step 3: Gel Formation and Aging

  1. Heat the sol to 80 °C using the hot plate and maintain this temperature for 2-3 hours while stirring. During this time, the sol will gradually transform into a gel.
  2. After forming the gel, let it cool to room temperature and age for 24-48 hours.

Step 4: Washing and Drying (Optional)

  1. Break the gel into smaller pieces and transfer them to a beaker containing distilled water. Stir the mixture for a few hours to remove any remaining impurities.
  2. Centrifuge the mixture to separate the TiO2 nanoparticles from the water. Discard the supernatant and keep the nanoparticle pellet.
  3. Dry the TiO2 nanoparticle pellet in an oven at 60 °C for a few hours or until completely dry.
